Description
Speaking with Representative Charlie Stenholm of Texas.; 1- During this session, Charlie has been the driving force behind efforts to pass a constitutional amendment to balance the budget. Because of his work, we got a chance to bote on the Balanced Budget Amendment on the House floor in June, but we came up nine votes short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass it. Charlie, it is hard to get a two-thirds vote on anything in the House. What was your reaction to that vote?; 2- One of the arguments opponents raised was that a vote for this amendment would force big cuts to the Social Security system. That was not the case, but do you think that influenced some members to vote no?; 3- Despite failure of the amendment, I know you are just as committed as I am to cut the deficit. Where do we go from here?; 4- The House leadership promised that if we defeated the amendment, they would bring a deficit reduction package to the floor. Can we expect something like that his year?;
