William C. Grissam writes to Isaac Franklin, a trader of enslaved persons, to complain that he does not want to pay the full price for the enslaved person Charity who has "bad habits."

Transcription

Dr Sir, Having recently received such information as induces me to believe you was knowing to the bad habits of the Negro Woman Charity, I purchased of you in December 1825, induces me to inform you that I think it entirely unjust, for me to pay the full amount agreed for. You will therefore please take notice that I have made no provision for the payment of my note due 15/18 this inst. And endorsed by John M. Whitney as I do not intend paying the same unless compelled by law. Respectfully, William C. Grissam
