Court case describing the unusual cruelty an enslaver inflicted on an enslaved person.
Transcription
The State v. John D. Leiner } Cruelty Plea "not guilty." Examination Samuel I. Cotton sworn says that the defendant employed him as a black smith to make and put on the neck of the negro slave Fanny, a collar of iron with two horns twenty-two inches long the whole weighing seventeen pounds, the same on the said Fanny here [[?]] that the irons are unusal and the punishment thereby inflicted cruel. Moses Neill [[?]] sworn says that he saw the negro woman Fanny wear the irons on her neck before mentioned has often heard altho considerably deaf the shrieks and lamentation of the negro and seen the defendent beat the negro with a large whip in a cruel and unusal manner — the defendant tied up the negro stretching her arm and body as high as possible with nothing to prefent the heavy from pressing on her neck. Moses Neill [[?]] sworn says to the same effect. Stephen Shayne sworn says to the same effort. Philip Jacobs sworn says that he has seen the defendant whip the negro in a cruel manner — and at another time one Miller a dutchman whipped her with a large loaded spanish whip in a cruel manner the defendant not forbidding — The defendent required to enter into recognizance to be of good behavior and not to inflict "cruel and unusual" punishmnet on said negro — [[?]] in $200 — and two good [[?]] securities in $100 each. which he neglected to give was committed to prison.
