Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston

This is a black and white photograph of Joseph E. Johnston, an American career army officer, an executive in the railroad and insurance businesses, and a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives, serving a single term. He was appointed as commissioner of railroads under Grover Cleveland. In the photograph, Johnston is seated, facing the left and wearing a dark suit and white shirt. The photograph is mounted on a black board and Johnston's signature is in the white border directly beneath the photograph. A typed descripton of the photograph and a brief biography of Johnston is on the back of the board.
