Abstract

Traditional Extension programs for older adults often adopt a reactive approach, focusing on addressing age-related challenges after they arise. While these programs can be beneficial, a proactive aging model offers a more comprehensive and empowering approach. The concept of proactive aging, emphasizing preventative strategies for maintaining and improving wellbeing, has been well-established in the literature (Kahana et al., 2014). By adopting this model, Cooperative Extension can significantly enhance its services for older adults. This paper proposes innovative program ideas grounded in the proactive aging framework. Such programs are more engaging as they foster self-efficacy and empowerment, encouraging participants to actively work towards a healthier and more fulfilling future. For instance, proactive care planning can help individuals anticipate their future needs and make informed decisions, reducing the need for reactive interventions in times of crisis. Cooperative Extension is ideally positioned to implement a proactive aging model. With its strong community connections and outreach capabilities, it can reach a wide range of older adults and offer accessible, relevant programs. By adopting this model, Extension services can play a vital role in supporting healthy aging, fostering vibrant communities, and empowering older adults to thrive throughout their golden years. This paper will contribute to the Extension literature by highlighting the shift towards a more proactive approach that can empower older adults to take control of their aging journey.
