Mississippi State House, Jackson, Miss. 1901-1903
This is a large scrapbook album which includes 49 eight-inch by ten-inch photographs of the construction of Mississippi’s New Capitol building, taken between 1900 and 1903. The original photographs are included in a specially-created album which belonged to R. A. Dean, a member of the Mississippi State House Commission. This appears to be one of a very small number of albums created for various officials and dignitaries in 1903 to mark the completion of the building. In addition to exterior photos of the demolition of the old state penitentiary and the construction of the new building, a number of the images document the finished interior chambers, corridors and staircases. Also included are a brief introductory description of the new building, a list of State House Commission members, a photograph of the architects, an index of the photographs, a floor plan of one floor of the building, descriptions of the pediment and the contents of the corner stone, and one exterior view of the Old Capitol. Also included is Dean’s official 1903 invitation to the laying of the corner stone, with notations on the back of the invitation which state Dean was a major during the Civil War.

The erect figure just beyond is History, behind whom in low relief, is the Indian, vanishing from the scene of action and yet forever linked with he history of Mississippi. Next in order stands the laborer, with his basket of newly picked cotton. Bending over her revolving wheel is poetry, her back turned upon the figures of two huntsmen, creeping cautiously upon their game. There all in all fourteen figures, twelve of which are high relief, the other two in low relief, the one of the child to suggest that which is to be and the one of the Indian to suggest that which has been.
