Darden Family Papers
Darden Family Papers digital collection contains selected materials from its corresponding physical collection. Putnam Darden, son of John P. Darden, was born on a plantation in 1836 in Fayette County, Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1856, and worked as a farmer until the Civil War broke out in 1861. During the war, he served in the Jefferson Flying Artillery, later known as the Jefferson Artillery and Darden’s Battery. Darden served under Beauregard, Hardy, Joe E. Johnston, and Hood. After the war he was active in the Grange movement, led by the Patrons of Husbandry. Formed in 1967, individual chapters, known as Granges, were created to educate people about farming and to support farmers. Darden was also a key player in the development of the Morrill Land Grant Act, which enabled the founding of Mississippi State A&M in 1878, now known as Mississippi State University (MSU) and the Hatch Experiment Act, which enabled the creation of the MSU Experiment Station in 1886. Known as a gifted orator, Darden gave many speeches in support of Missisisppi State. Putnam Darden died in 1888. He was married four times, had eight children, and was a member of the Christian Church in Fayette and superintendent of the Sunday School. A memorial to him may be found on the MSU campus, located across from the SMART bus stop next to McCool Hall. This digital collection has receipts, checks, and other business documents. This handwritten note, dated April 28, 1868, is an order for twenty sacks of corn from Thomas L. Darden to Jesse H. Darden. The order also states that when Thomas makes another trip he will return the corn he borrowed to plant.

This handwritten note, dated April 8, 1868, is an order request for seven sacks of corn by Thomas L. Darden from his cousin, Jesse Darden. The order requests the corn be sent with Phil. The bottom and right edge of the paper is slightly jagged from being torn.

This handwritten note, dated March 18, 1868, is an order request for twelve sacks of corn by Thomas L. Darden of his cousin, Jessie Darden. The order requests that Jessie allow Edmond to take the corn. The top and bottom edges of the paper are slightly jagged.

This handwritten note, dated March 20, 1868, is an order request for seven sacks of corn at a cost of seventeen dollars and sixty-six cents ordered from Jessie H. Darden from Flemming and Baldwin. The order includes a penciled note at the bottom stating that the driver says he could have no more than 7 sacks, signed by Fleming and Baldwin.

This handwritten note, dated March 25, 1868, is an order request for six sacks of corn by Thomas L. Darden of his cousin, Jessie Darden. The order requests that Jessie to give Phil the six bags of corn to complete the fulfillment of his previous order of twelve sacks. The top and bottom edges of the paper are slightly jagged.

Wertheimer in Fayette, Mississippi from December 1865 to February 1866 and billed in March 1866. An orange, two cent George Washington postage stamp is in the center of the statement.

This handwritten letter, dated January 22, 1861, is written from A. L. Sholinh to John P. Darden assuring Darden that he has no ill feelings towards him whatsoever. He goes on to assure Darden that he intends to do what is right. He states that he sold Darden the land in good faith and believes that Darden is trying to back out of the deal. He encourages Darden to behave honorably and states that if Darden disagrees, the matter will be settled in court.

Darden updating him on his life, his finances, and what life has been like since he and his family moved to Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. Brown goes on to express his admiration for Darden and asks after his family.
