Baldwin Camp, Miss. January 6, 1897
This black and white image of Baldwin Camp, dated January 6, 1897, includes a structure on the dock with trees on either side and the Semper Idem (Latin for Always the Same) Schooner or Yacht docked in front. The back of the image identifies the camp and date. Albert Baldwin, a prominent New Orleans merchant and banker, built this lodge, which was located in Harrison County on the Pearl River near its mouth. The Baldwin Lodge, also called the Club House, was built in 1892 at the east end of the Louisville and Nashville bridge going over the Pearl River. The luxurious lodge had a swimming pool and a large dock. Baldwin died in April 1912. Baldwin was called “Commodore” Baldwin and this image depicts his famous “trim steam yacht” the Semper Idem in 1897. The legendary lodge was destroyed decades later by a hurricane.
