25th Avenue and 14th Street, Gulfport, Mississippi
This postcard feature a color illustration of the intersection of 25th Avenue and 14th Street in Gulfport, Mississippi. Two street cars are depicted turning on their routes. The Hewes Brothers Department Store can be seen on the right, rising five stories, with the Bank of Commerce nearby. It was called the “skyscraper” of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in its day. Horse-drawn wagons and buggies are seen on the street among people walking. Various utility poles are depicted on either side of the streets. 25th Street is modern day Highway 49. This was the heart of downtown Gulfport not far from the Gulf. The title of the card is printed along the top of the image. The back of the postcard is addressed to Mrs. Jemmie Amstutz in Grafill, Indiana. The card's postmark is partially missing and a green, one cent George Washington postage stamp is placed in the upper right corner. An inscription is written on the left half of the card. This is an official post card of the Mississippi Centennial Exposition featuring the Coliseum, built in the same architectural style as all the exposition buildings--a long, two story structure with towers on each corner of the front. Flags fly from the roof of the towers. flower-lined walkways and a narrow inground pool lead up to the building. The title at the top of the card notes the exposition was supposed to last from Dec. 10, 1917 to June 10, 1918. The title identifying the Coliseum is printed at the bottom edge of the card.
