Mississippi Coast Region

The Mississippi Coast Region consists of Bay St. Louis, Biloxi, Diamondhead, Gautier, Gulfport, Long Beach, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Pascagoula, Pass Christian, Waveland, Wiggans, Cat Island, and Ship Island.

    25th Avenue and 14th Street, Gulfport, Mississippi

    This postcard feature a color illustration of the intersection of 25th Avenue and 14th Street in Gulfport, Mississippi. Two street cars are depicted turning on their routes. The Hewes Brothers Department Store can be seen on the right, rising five stories, with the Bank of Commerce nearby. It was called the “skyscraper” of the Mississippi Gulf Coast in its day. Horse-drawn wagons and buggies are seen on the street among people walking. Various utility poles are depicted on either side of the streets. 25th Street is modern day Highway 49. This was the heart of downtown Gulfport not far from the Gulf. The title of the card is printed along the top of the image. The back of the postcard is addressed to Mrs. Jemmie Amstutz in Grafill, Indiana. The card's postmark is partially missing and a green, one cent George Washington postage stamp is placed in the upper right corner. An inscription is written on the left half of the card.     This postcard features a hand colored image of the Great Southern Hotel in Gulfport, Mississippi, a three story, L shaped building set back behind a lush green lawn and several trees. Dormers line the roof of the building and a long sidewalk leads to the entrance. The title of the card is printed along the upper left of the card. The back of the card is addressed to W. O. Bell in Madison Heights, Virginia. The card is postmarked Gulfport, Mississippi, July 22, 1923 and a green, one cent George Washington postage stamp is placed in the upper right corner.     This postcard features a color illustration of a Baptist Church in Gulfport, Mississippi, a three story building with a gabled roof, four Colossal Ionic columns across the front porch and a tall staircase leading to the entrance. A wide cupola is in the center of the roof and trees and sidewalks line the church lawn. The title of the card is printed along the bottom left edge of the card. The back of the card is addressed to Mrs. W. N. Vance in Chicago Heights, Illinois and is postmarked Jackson, R. P. O, March 30, 1921. A green, one cent George Washington postage stamp is placed in the upper right corner and an inscription is written on the left half of the card. [see transcription field] A paragraph in the upper left describes Gulfport as the "Church center" and speaks of the pride of the churches in the area.

    This color postcard features sheep grazing in a wooden fenced pasture with the title "Greetings from Waveland, Miss." along the bottom of the card. The back of the postcard identifies the item as a postcard. A green one cent postage stamp is placed in the upper right corner and the card is postmarked Waveland, Mississippi, June 23, 1920. The card is inscribed in pencil and is addressed to Miss Claire Forrest in New Orleans, Louisiana.

    Mississippi Centennial Exposition--Gulfport, Mississippi, December 10th, 1917 to June 10th, 1918, The Coliseum

    This is an official post card of the Mississippi Centennial Exposition featuring the Coliseum, built in the same architectural style as all the exposition buildings--a long, two story structure with towers on each corner of the front. Flags fly from the roof of the towers. flower-lined walkways and a narrow inground pool lead up to the building. The title at the top of the card notes the exposition was supposed to last from Dec. 10, 1917 to June 10, 1918. The title identifying the Coliseum is printed at the bottom edge of the card. An inscription is written across the top of the image. The back of the postcard is addressed to Mr. John Vrisband in Magnolia, Mississippi. The card is postmarked Jackson, August 10, 1920 and a red, two cent George Washington postage stamp is placed upside down in the upper right corner. Piers can be faintly seen in the water in the distance. The title in the white space on the left beneath the image identifies the location as "Back Bay, Ocean Springs, Miss." Copyright information is in the right side of the white space beneath the image.     This postcard features a color illustration of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad train bridge to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. A train is depicted on the railroad bridge with smoke visible from the engine stack. A pier is also visible in the water to the left of the railroad bridge and foliage and green plants are seen from the shore looking toward the water and the bridge.
