Trees and bushes are pictured behind the arch and sign and a bust or statue of a Civil War general is pictured to the right of the sign. A paragraph about Vicksburg and the Park is printed on the left side on the back of the card that reads "Arch at Entrance to Vicksburg National Military Park, Mississippi: In 1798 United States troops took formal possession of Mississippi Territory and in 1812 Vicksburg was laid out on lands formerly owned by Newest Vick, a devout Methodist. Mississippi became a state in 1817, but withdrew from the Union in 1861. During the struggle that followed, it became evident that Vicksburg occupied a strategic site, so it became the object of a siege and repeated assaults. Finally, on July 4, 1863, Vicksburg surrendered. This gave the Union Army control of the Mississippi River. during the hectic days of battle this site was partly occupied by Union Soldiers. Today this Romanesque gate opens on a beautiful tract of 120 acres known as the Vicksburg National Military Park, which is the resting place for those who fought and died during this Tragic Era.   Lucious Lampton

  This is a calendar that includes 13 historic photographic images from the Lucius Lampton Collection of Tylertown and Walthall County. Each photograph in the calendar includes a description. The last page of the calendar includes the list of officers and the board of directors for the Walthall County Mississippi Trust for the Preservation of History, Culture, and the Arts (Walthall County Historical Society). This book was created by Dr. Lucius Lampton, who wrote all the copy and designed it for the Walthall County Historical Trust. It was published in 1997 by the Tylertown Times newspaper in Tylertown.

  Camp Van Dorn 861st Field Artillery Battalion

  This approximately 10 inches by 34 inches panoramic image features the 861st Field Artillery Battalion on July 15, 1944. In the background of the over three hundred uniformed soldiers is a pecan grove in front of the soldiers’ large tar paper barracks. Camp Van Dorn was a 41,844-acre US military camp located in Amite and Wilkinson Counties, just south of Centreville in southern Mississippi. Named for Confederate general Earl Van Dorn of Mississippi, this US Army post served as a training camp for ground force division soldiers destined for the European Theater from 1942 to 1945. The camp played a critical role in preparing American troops for combat in World War II.

The entire fourth floor of the building has arched windows and there are ornate moldings along the roofline. An early twentieth century car is parked at the sidewalk in the right side of the hotel.   This sepia toned photograph offers a bird's eye view of the north eastern part of Vicksburg, Mississippi from the courthouse. Trees and buildings are visible. The image appears to have been taken from the cupola of Vicksburg’s famous Court House. The image displays post-Civil War Vicksburg as well the Mississippi River and bluff in the distance. The photograph is faded. The handwritten caption beneath reads “No. 1, Bird’s Eye View of the North Eastern Part of Vicksburg from the Court House.”

  Portrait of General John C. Pemberton

  This black and white portrait is of General John C. Pemberton, a confederate officer who led the Army of Mississippi from December 1862 to July 1863 and was the commanding officer during the Confederate surrender at the Siege of Vicksburg. Pemberton is pictured here with a long beard wearing a double breasted military uniform. His name is written as Genl Pemberton C. S. A. at the bottom of the photograph. His name is also written on the back of the photo.
