The U.S. Court House and Post Office in Aberdeen, Mississippi was built in 1885. Also known as Old Federal Building, it served historically as a court house and as a post office. It is a red brick and gray stone two and a half story building in the “Victorian Romanesque style embellished with Gothic and Classical details” with arched windows, a gabled roof, and arched details at the entrances. the Confederate monument, set within a round wrought iron fence, is an obelisk with a statue of a solder on top. The monument is located on the Court Square in front of the Lafayette County courthouse in Oxford, Mississippi. Trees and the a small portion of the courthouse are seen behind the monument and what looks like trash is pictured at the base of the monument. Okolona Sign, Okolona, Mississippi
This postcard is a color illustration of the Okolona sign seen on the side of the road while entering the town of Okolona, Mississippi. The sign is bright yellow with dark lettering that reads "Okolona "THE LITTLE CITY THAT DOES BIG THINGS". Fences, trees, grassy, and a cemetery headstones can be seen behind the sign. The text printed on the upper left of the back of the card reads "Okolona, Miss. On U. S. Hwy. 45W Okolona's slogan comes from the fact that it has progressed from what Lowell Thomas in the early 30's called the "hardest hit town in the nation" to a thriving industrial and agricultural community."

Pike roads were traditionally roads used as the main roads for farmers bringing goods to market as privately-funded toll roads in which the money went into maintenance, improvements and owners’ pockets. Written on the back is “Lamars. Mattie, Lizzie, Ella, and Clyde. The first male’s name is scratched out. The male on the far right is Elbert Clyde Lamar (1896-1970), son of Ebbart Harris Lamar and Lula Virginia Foust Lamar of Pontotoc.

Rust College, Holly Springs, Mississippi

Rust College is a historically black liberal arts college in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Founded in 1866, it is the second-oldest private college in Mississippi. Associated with the United Methodist Church, it is one of only ten historically black colleges and universities founded before 1868 that is still operating. The title of the card is printed in the upper left edge of the image.

Rust University, Holly Springs, Mississippi
This postcard features a color illustration of a building on the Rust University campus in Holly Springs, Mississippi. The building is a five story building with a tower on the left and a dome on the right. Another, smaller building is to the right and trees are in the front and to the side of the buildings. The title of the card is printed in the upper left of image. Rust College was established in 1866 by the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Its founders were missionaries from the North who opened a school in Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church, accepting adults of all ages, as well as children, for instruction in elementary subjects. A year later the first building on the present campus was erected. In 1870, the school was chartered as Shaw University, honoring the Reverend S.O. Shaw, who made a gift of $10,000 to the new institution. In 1892, the name was changed to Rust University to avoid confusion with another Shaw University. The name was a tribute to Richard S. Rust of Cincinnati, Ohio, Secretary of the Freedman’s Aid Society. In 1915, the title was changed to the more realistic name, Rust College. As students progressed, high school and college courses were added to the curriculum, and in 1878 two students were graduated from the college department. As public schools for African Americans became more widespread, the need for private schools decreased, and in 1930 the grade school was discontinued. The high school continued to function until 1953.

Saxon Trouser Co., Aberdeen, Mississippi
This postcard features a black and white image of the Saxon Trouser Co. building in Aberdeen, Mississippi, a one story, brick building with a awnings over the entrances. Two trees are pictured at the sidewalk in front of the building and mid-twentieth century cars are seen parked in various places. The title of the card is printed in the bottom edge of the card. This Balance Agriculture with Industry plant was built in Aberdeen in 1954. Saxon Trouser Manufacturing Company filed for incorporation June 10, 1954. From 1954 until late 1958 this plant was owned and operated by Saxon Trousers Manufacturing Company (Saxon). From 1955 until the closing of Saxon’s plant following a strike, Saxon operated under a bargaining agreement with Local 715 of the Union, to which at least 85% of its employees belonged. During the 1958 strike a majority of the employees joined in the strike but only a small number of strikers engaged in picketing the plant. The Saxon plant and equipment were purchased by the T. I. L. Sportswear, Inc. who reopened the plant but continued to have issues with union workers at the company.

Depot and Depot Hotel, Holly Springs, Mississippi
This postcard features a sepia toned image of the depot and depot hotel in Holly Springs, Mississippi. The building is a two story with three-bay end pavilions surmounted by tent-roof towers and a three-bay center pavilion with an ornate pyramidal roof tower. Electric power poles are seen along the sidewalk in front of the building and people are standing at the entrance. A handwritten inscription along the right edge of the image reads "All OK. Depot and Depot Hotel Rather lonesome. N. B." The back of the card is addressed to John H. Jarvis and is postmarked Holley Springs, Mississippi, April 2, 1907.

This postcard features two black and white images from Iuka, Mississippi. The image on the left is a two story house with a gabled roof, a long front porch and a second story balcony. Trees are behind the house and bushes of varying sizes are in front of and beside the house. A wood rail fence runs along the front yard near the road. The second image is a group of gazebos and a dock at a small body of water. Trees are seen behind the gazebos. "Iuka, Miss." is printed below the left edge of the image and the photographer's name, Brewer, is printed beneath the right edge of the image. The back of the card is addressed to Miss Lorena Phillippa in Corinth, Mississippi. the card is postmarked Iuka, Miss, September 1907 and a green, one cent Benjamin Franklin postage stamp is placed in the upper right corner. This postcard features two black and white images from the New Clopton Hotel in Aberdeen, Mississippi. The image on the left is of a two story building with a turret on the left end, a long front porch and a second story balcony with white columns and railings. A tree partially obscures the right end of the building. The image on the right is of two, two story buildings with gabled roofs and short porches with columns. A tree on the right partially obscures the side of the house. The title of the card is printed beneath the images and an inscription is written above and below the image. A postmark for Vicksburg, Miss., February 9, 1907 and a "received" mark are stamped on the right and left corners of the images, respectively. The back of the card is addressed to Miss Jewell Davis in Vicksburg, Mississippi. A faded postmark is beside a green, one cent Benjamin Franklin postage stamp in the upper right of the card.

Opera House, Aberdeen, Mississippi
This postcard features a black and white image of the opera house in Aberdeen, Mississippi. Known at the time as the Temple Opera House, the building is a three or four story structure with peaked gables along the roof line and a tower on the far left corner. A gazebo shaped structure is a the front entrance with men and horse and buggies parked beneath it. A Pepsi-Cola sign is seen on the side of the building and a Masonic square and compass symbol is on the front gable peak of the roof. According to the donor, the opera house was built by the Masons in 1884. The title of the card is printed sideways outside the right edge of the image and an illegible inscription is written beneath the title. The back of the card is addressed to Fritz Wagner in Berlin, Germany. The card is postmarked Jackson, Miss., November 11, 1907 and a red, two cent George Washington postage stamp is placed in the upper right corner.

Oxen Being Driven On A Dirt Street
This postcard features a sepia toned image of a group of six oxen hitched together to pull a wagon on a dirt road. The driver is standing to the right of the middle section of oxen and a building with little boys seated in front is seen behind the oxen. The inscription written in the bottom corner reads, "Nina, See these oxen, They use them down here. The [black man] is the driver. They belong to a white man. The language [used] in driving them is so funny. M. G." [Note: This archival transcription was revised as part of reparative description initiatives. Original archival records have not been altered.] The back of the image is addressed to Miss Nina Carter in Hardin, Illinois. The card is postmarked twice: Blue Mountain, Mississippi, March 18, 1907 and Hardin, Illinois, March 24, 1907.
