Pine Belt Region

The Pine Belt Region of Mississippi consists of New Augusta, Prentis, Ellisville, Lumberton, Laurel, Leakesville, Hattiesburg, Brookhaven, Bassfield, Collins, Columbia, Petal, Purvis, Richton, Sandersville, Soso, State Line, Sumrall, Waynesboro, and Bay Springs.

    This black and white photograph is a rare original photograph of the Mississippi Industrial and Training School Band of Columbia, Mississippi. The photograph is taken on the steps in front of a columned structure. The band members are all boys, uniformed, displaying their instruments with the Training School banner behind them. The back of the photograph is stamped with the photographer's information in the center and "Jack Sanford" is handwritten near the top. The photograph is mounted on a dark board and the edges of the board are torn.

    Carter Building, Corner of Front and Main Streets, Hattiesburg, Mississippi

    This postcard features a black and white image of the Carter Building, a six story building on the corner of Front and Main Streets in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. A sign reading "Hays and Field" is on the roof of the building. The Carter building, built 1904-5, is one of the icons of downtown Hattiesburg. Named after John Prentiss Carter, who served as Mississippi’s lieutenant governor from 1904 to 1908, the 100-year-old building has been completely renovated to house multiple lofts and retail and office space on the first floor. The six story building stands at the corner of Main Street and Front Street. Carter was a Hattiesburg banker and attorney. In 1973 the building was sold to Faulkner Concrete Pipe Company and became known as the Faulkner Building. Recently, its original name was returned to the building. The title of the card is printed beneath the image and an inscription is written around the image of the building in the "sky" and "ground" parts of the image. The back of the card is addressed to Mr. E. H. Sojourner in Slidell, Louisiana.
